All the dirt washed away, washed away, washed away

There are several topics making the rounds in the blogosphere. The OTO is "promulgating" this or "promulgating" that. All the while, the Crowley works, including the Thoth deck, become more and more rare. While I do appreciate the rising value of my book collection, it seems to be a rather heavily conflicted approach. Is verbally espousing "same-sex marriage" the same as agitating for it? While barely passing as political activism, how can we posit it as a valid manifestation of Thelema? Relevent to all this is John Crow's post regarding The Shallow Engagement in the Occult and the Esoteric.

Also amusing is the Facebook application Causes. It shows that with 1,531 members, only $322 has been donated to the Thelema cause.

Sister of Battle
Ready to combat the enemies of the God-Emporer of Man

Many of you may know this already, but Obama seems as fond of secrecy and under the table deals as did Bush. Hiding behind "National Security," Obama refused to let people know the contents of the ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) until it was finally leaked to much outrage.

Conservatism is itself a modernism, and in this lies the secret of its success. What distinguishes Burke from the French Revolutionaries is not his attachment to things past, but his desire to live fully in the present, to understand it in all its imperfections, and to accept it as the only reality offered to us….Burke…recognized the distinction between a backward-looking nostalgia, which is but another form of modern sentimentality, and a genuine tradition, which grants us the courage and the vision with which to live in the modern world. - Roger Scruton, A Political Philosophy.

keith418 provides this look at Ayn Rand with some intimations on her influence on the American Right. "Since the great crash of 2008, her writing has had another Benzedrine rush, as Rush Limbaugh hails her as a prophetess." Though my favorite was "We all live every day with the victory of this fifth-rate Nietzsche of the mini-malls."

The Oregonian had an article on how Intermarriage is affecting the Native American cultural legacy.

You've probably heard of the Fort Hood attack. Military.com linked this article on the matter. "While we withhold judgment awaiting more facts, it’s safe to say this terrorist act will only deepen the mistrust many Americans have for those who follow the Islamic faith. And that is a sad truth."

New Hitler movie built around footage by Eva Braun. See the friendly face of National Socialism. Some people are upset by the idea that Hitler was first and foremost an actual human rather than a demonic incarnation of Satan.

To the sound of the bells
Oh victorious way
To the sound of the bells
On a glorious day

All the scum washed away, washed away, washed away
All the dirt washed away, washed away, washed away

Hör’ die Glocken, sie künden von siegreicher Schlacht
Hör’ die Glocken, sie künden vom Ende der Nacht

Von Throhnstahl "Bells"

7 Wonders of the (Un)Dead World: Global Ossuaries

My friend plutherus is excited because the archeological dig he assisted with (something about playing with poo in a dark cave or some such) is written up on the Nature magazine website. "Archaeologists claim to have found the oldest known artefact in the Americas, a scraper-like tool in an Oregon cave that dates back 14,230 years." Sadly the whole article requires payment, but I believe he subscribed to the magazine, so I should be able to read the whole thing soon.

I've always wondered just what kind of marvels Japan would provide for us if they didn't have to rebuild Tokyo all the time due to monster attacks. First, the Space Elevator, now they have stepped on toward the second stage for placing a geosynchronous solar paneled satellite above Japan to provide power for their country.

Larry Elkin discusses his childhood, how he called Soupy Sales while home alone at 8 & how he rode the subway to the Indian Consulate (for a report about India) alone at 10. We aren't even permitted to do these things anymore.

Exciting Afternoon

First let me clarify that my children were merely bystanders. There was no evidence linking them to the fire.

My children's elementary and middle school caught on fire. The children were counted and taken to the nearby library. From there they called me and explained that the children could not walk home (it was still within 10 or so blocks of my house) and that I would need to pick them up. I called my ex, hoping she could pick them up, but no, her car is broken.

When I arrived, the front of the library was cordoned off with four visible police officers. It was explained that I needed to write down my children's names and the police would carry the note to whomever was inside & they would get the children. It was kind of a hassle. I am hoping that it was just to keep the camera crews away from the children & not out of some ridiculous fear of kidnapping.

Anyway, the Oregonian has an article on the fire already, and the news clips are from the local KATU station's website.

This one has some close-ups of the fire with a voice over from a phone interview with one of the fifth grade students.

*removed non-functioning video links.*
Watch on YouTube (1:11) (4:37)

And the Dead Rose, It was the Re-erection Promised by the Lord

Many of you may know of dictator88. Currently he is living in Mexico. He has posted some pictures for the celebrations that went on over Halloween weekend. He also provided a link to the wikipedia article on Santa Muerte. He also kindly gave permission for me to repost some of his photographs.

Ofrenda for/to/of Dead Child

Statues of Saint Death (Santa Muerte)

Sigils in front of the Shrine to Santa Muerte
Does anyone know what they mean?

Saving the world through bio-engineering. Toyota creates flowers that reduce pollution. Though I am worried on one level that the plants will run amok and bring on a new ice age...

Incremental -- no, almost non-existent -- changes. Obama upholds Bush Administration's decisions regarding warrantless wiretapping. National Security cited as reason to dismiss case.

More Halloween goodness. Evidently, Salem, Mass. is conducting a new witch-hunt. Sexy Costumes Lead To Tween Prostitution Arrests. Thanks to StevenSteven for posting this link.

"In Salem, the girls were dressed as Sexy Hello Kitty, Sexy American Girl and Sexy Dora the Explorer, along with more generic costumes like Sexy Witch, Sexy Princess and Sexy Preschooler"

[note: it's satire]

I often post about the abuses of the sex offenders list, for a change of pace I present the case of Sarah Kruzan. She killed her pimp who'd raped her and put her out as a prostitute at the age of 13. She was 16 and got life -- for killing a pimp. It's not like she was a brutal rapist or a clear and present danger to society. Hell, she did society a favor.

New Music

BARBAROSSA UMTRUNK / Kazeria - 72 Candles In Cairo CD
Split CD 11 track (72min) in DVD case with 2 Insert is hand numbered of 100 copies.
This 75 normal CD and 25 copies comes with bonus VCD ( Video 25min).

Barbarossa Umtrunck and Kazeria [KZ] have released a split album called '72 Candles in Cairo 1904.' As you might guess, it is dedicated to Liber AL. Barbarossa Umtruck normally delivers an enjoyable Martial Industrial / Militant Neofolk type sound. The works on this album introduce a ritual ambient element and makes liberal use of the vocals on "The Great Beast Speaks" album. The Kazeria [KZ] tracks start off with the moody title track. I am reminded of the works On Coil's 'Musick To Play In The Dark.' Calm, brooding pieces with minor interjections of discordance -- they are difficult to make out, but I believe that they are also Crowley samples. The ending sample on 'Black Stars of Thelema' is great, some British accented woman saying that Crowley was what you would call today a psychopath (due to his lack of morals). The final Kazeria track is more upbeat, rather EBM-like.

I have not watched the DVD yet.

Sample tracks:
Barbarossa Umtrunk - Aiwas Commandments
Kazeria - 72 candles in Cairo

Tombs of the Blind Dead, Zombie, Hell of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead, Night of the Comet, Return

You know how your cat will hunt and bring you the prey? They theorize that this is because they do not see you hunting and they want to make sure you eat. My children do the same thing on Halloween. At least the chocolate is more appetizing than the mouse.
Zombies, we all secretly (or not so secretly) love them -- but why? With Night of the Living Dead, Zombies became America's Godzilla, a cautionary tale of what could happen when Science runs amok. Unlike with Godzilla, however, they are also a reassurance that no matter what those pointy headed scientists get up to, a shotgun and machete are all that is required to set things right. (article)

Evidently, the Kanji character known as Fenrir means "Ice Wolf." I haven't been able to verify this using google and I cannot really use a Kanji dictionary yet, however if this is correct a little part of me thinks it is really cool. Hail the universal proto-language...

I've been really enjoying Wakashima Kanon (分島 花音). Imagine a ethereal goth style with a cello and you are in the ballpark for her sound. Evidently, she works with Mana (Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois) who has a more Death Rock/Metal edge. When I saw this ending for Vampire Knight, I had to find the artist.

<lj-embed id="43" />
Search at Nipponsei for Vampire Knight ending will get you the torrent for this track.

As many of you know, I was once an "employee" of the Church of Scientology.
Kotodama (言霊): Soul of Language

Kotodama or kototama (言霊, lit. "word spirit/soul") refers to the Japanese belief that mystical powers dwell in words and names. English translations include "soul of language", "spirit of language", "power of language", "power word", "magic word", and "sacred sound". The notion of kotodama presupposes that sounds can magically affect objects, and that ritual word usages can influence our environment, body, mind, and soul.

This Japanese compound kotodama combines koto 言 "word; speech" and tama 霊 "spirit; soul" (or 魂 "soul; spirit; ghost") voiced as dama in rendaku. In contrast, the unvoiced kototama pronunciation especially refers to kototamagaku (言霊学, "study of kotodama"), which was popularized by Onisaburo Deguchi in the Oomoto religion. This field takes the Japanese gojūon phonology as the mystical basis of words and meanings, in rough analogy to Hebrew Kabbalah.

The etymology of kotodama is uncertain, but one explanation correlating words and events links two Japanese words pronounced koto: this 言 "word; words; speech" and 事 "situation; circumstances; state of affairs; occurrence; event; incident". Note that these two kanji were used interchangeably in the name Kotoshironushi 事代主 or 言代主, an oracular kami mentioned in the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. Kotodama is related with Japanese words such as kotoage 言挙 "words raised up; invoke the magical power of words", kotomuke 言向 "directed words; cause submission though the power of words", and jumon 呪文 "magic spell; magic words; incantation".

Kotodama is a central concept in Japanese mythology, Shinto, and Kokugaku. For example, the Kojiki describes an ukei (or seiyaku) 誓約 "covenant; trial by pledge" between the sibling gods Susanoo and Amaterasu, "Let each of us swear, and produce children". Uttering the divine words of an ukehi supposedly determines results, and in this case, Amaterasu giving birth to five male deities proved that Susanoo's intentions were pure.

Kototama or kotodama is also fundamental to Japanese martial arts, for instance, in the use of kiai. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, used kototama as a spiritual basis for his teachings. William Gleason says Ueshiba "created aikido based on the kototama principle," and quotes him that "Aikido is the superlative way to practice the kototama. It is the means by which one realizes his true nature as a god and finds ultimate freedom." Mutsuro Nakazono, a disciple of Ueshiba, wrote books on the importance of kototama in aikido.

While other cultures have animistic parallels to kotodama, such as mantra, mana, and logos, some Japanese people believe the "word spirit" is unique to the Japanese language. One of the classical names of Japan is kotodama no sagiwau kuni (言霊の幸う国, "the land where the mysterious workings of language bring bliss"), a phrase that originated in the Man'yōshū.

from Wikipedia

No no no Halloween

My children were told that they cannot wear costumes to school because it might offend those who don't celebrate Halloween. Wouldn't it be more productive to let those children stay home?

Lenore gives us a link to this article in the NYTimes on the related phenomenon of not wanting to be too scary.

Token Activism. I received this in my mailbox.

Jon Stewart Needs Letters of Support for having Dr. Barghouti and Anna Baltzer on “The Daily Show"

We’ve been asked to pass on this urgent request.

From: anna.baltzer@gmail.com

Daily Show needs letters of support for having Barghouti & me on

Dear friends,

Last night Dr. Barghouti and I were on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart talking about Palestine.

The show was overwhelmed with angry emails and phone calls prior to the appearance, and up until the last minute it seemed like they might cancel. During the taping the show had it's only heckler in 11 years. The entire staff was very nervous and may come to regret the monumental decision (and not make it again) as they will surely be inundated now that the show has aired.

That is why it is CRUCIAL that the show receive letters of support from anyone who appreciated the interview.

PLEASE take a moment to give a quick thank you to the Daily Show. I'm sure they will likely be affected by numbers rather than length, so it's OK to make it short, but spread the word to others! Be sure to put "Thank you" in the subject, and maybe Dr. Barghouti & my names. Fill out the form here: http://www.comedycentral.com/help/questionsCC.jhtml

(make sure to choose The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as your topic).

You can also try calling 212-468-1700.

Many of you who watched the show on TV noticed that everything of real substance that I said was edited out. The major issues cut out were (1) the U.S. role in aiding Israel, (2) the lack of adequate coverage in mainstream U.S. media, and (3) the Palestinian-led movement for Boycott / Divestment / Sanctions (BDS) to nonviolently pressure Israel to comply with international law.

The full, un-cut interview is available on the Daily Show homepage: www.thedailyshow.com

It's worth watching and comparing with what they allowed said in the TV version.

Regardless of the cuts, this was a huge step for the movement (and Dr. Barghouti's left-in parts were excellent, in my opinion). If you agree, do make your letters positive, even if you decide to mention the disappointing discrepancy between the full interview and what was aired.

I believe the interview wouldn't have happened three years ago. Times are changing. Keep on keepin' on...

Anna

PS: I launched a new version of my website in time for the show, in case you're interested:

www.AnnaInTheMiddleEast.com <http://www.AnnaInTheMiddleEast.com/>

For more information see http://mondoweiss.net.

Politically speaking, the crisis of the principle of authority seems to us to constitute the most serious difficulty. Let us repeat that we speak of authority in the true sense, which is such as to determine not only obedience, but also natural adherence and direct recognition. - Evola [cited by keith418]

Lind discusses how "La Familia" in Mexico has replaced the state in its region. In everything they make, they hollow out a central place for death, let its rancid smell contaminate every dimension of whatever still survives. Men especially love murder. In art they celebrate it, and in life they commit it. They embrace murder as if life without it would be devoid of passion, meaning, and action, as if murder were solace, stilling their sobs as they mourn the emptiness and alienation of their lives - Andrea Dworkin

What is meant by the Method of Science? Charles Maurras states "What our fathers did through custom and feeling, we ourselves pursue it through reason and will, with the assurance and clarity of science." Gornahoor (briefly) discusses this quote as contrasted with Marx (the winning view) and science's subordination to a Materialistic Ideology.

I must say, listening to Last.FM's Shonen Knife radio is exposing me to a lot of pretty fun Japanese Girl "punk" bands -- many of which seem to have a strong "surf" music undercurrent (e.g. GitoGito Hustler).
TriORE "Three Hours" (Triarii & Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio project)

I received my copy of the joint project between Triarii and Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio. It is an excellent album, however it seems to be dominated more by the Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio than Triarii. My guess is that Tomas Pettersson wrote the lyrics which in turn forced the music into a style very similar to an Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio album. Perhaps it is a little more bombastic, but I was hoping for a stronger Triarii presence. You should still buy a copy as it is well worth the price, but I am still a little disappointed.

Reoccurance

While I have often commented on how various anime or manga make references to things in western culture, I was quite caught off guard by this quote from Kimi wa Petto (You are my Pet): "I'm disgusted with every human being. However, I love to laugh, and I cannot possibly laugh by myself." -- Shioran.

Keith418 randomly selects various quotes that make him think of his friends. I am pretty sure that one of those was "Out of patience with them all. But I like to laugh. And I cannot laugh alone" by Cioran. I have this quote on my LastFM page.

Some things just tend to be designed to make me revel in the synchronicity of the universe.
Is it wrong to find them amusing when they refer to Spock positively while explaining how detrimental Jews are?

Quite naturally, White Nationalists want to cut loose that "huge anchor" pulling America in an anti-racist direction, eject the people who are "urinating" in our discursive pool, and cast off the "70 lb. backpack" holding down our movement. As Spock would say, it is only logical. I emphasize: this is not to say the Jews should be rounded up in concentration camps and exterminated. Rather, we believe they should seek refuge elsewhere, maybe in Israel where they already have a state of their own.

Romania Weighs Decriminalizing Consensual Incest

Yet another example of the abuse of sex offender laws.

Michigan allows people to be good neighbors again. Governor instructs child services to rewrite law so that watching neighbors children while they wait for the bus does not require a day care license.

http://xkcd.com/647/

Aleister Crowley 2012: [thanks kieth418]

Julius Evola On Tradition And The Right [via keith418]
"Real men exist to attain knowledge of the transcendent and to strive and accomplish heroically."

"While in a ‘pure blood’ horse or cat the biological element constitutes the central one, and therefore racial considerations can be legitimately restricted to it, this is certainly not the case with man, or at least any man worthy of the name . . . Therefore racial treatment of man can not stop only at a biological level."

"Evola was no lackey of the Fascist regime. He attacked conciliation with the Vatican in the years before the 1929 Vatican Accords and developed an interpretation of race that directly contradicted the one favored by the German government and important currents within Fascism. His journal, La Torre (The Tower), was closed down in 1930 because of his criticism of Fascist toughs, gli squadristi. Evola, however, never had to face jail for his serious writings during the Fascist era. That had to wait for liberal democracy."

"Hansen quotes right-wing Italians who say that Evola’s influence discourages political action because his Tradition comes from an impossibly distant past and assumes an impossibly transcendent truth and a hopelessly pessimistic view of the present. Yet Evola confronts the modern world with an absolute challenge. Its materialism, egalitarianism, feminism, and economism are fundamentally wrong. The way out is through rejecting these mistakes and returning to spirit, transcendence and hierarchy, to the Männerbund and the Legionary Spirit. It may be discouraging to think that we are living in a Dark Age, but the Kali Yuga is also the end of a cosmic cycle."

She just the Girl you Want.
The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.

More info on how social networks sell your personably identifiable information.

Yet another article on user data, and the class divisions they show, in MySpace vs. Facebook.

Evidently, Vodka can help one to survive "moderate to severe traumatic brain injury." More work needs to be done, but it is nice to know that it not only increases one's chances of getting the injury, but also of surviving it.

...and he taught what has come to be known as the "four noble truths." In fact, the term translated as "noble" is *a-ryan*, a Sanskrit word, ruined by Hitler, meaning "superior." The Indo-European peoples who appeared in northern India around 1500 BCE called themselves Aryans. The Buddha is said to have redefined the word to mean superiority of character and insight (specifically someone who has seen nirva-na) rather than superiority of blood and birth. Thus, his first teachings concerns four things that are truths for those who have seen nirva-na but that are not known by the unenlightened; a more accurate rendering would thus be "four truths for the [spiritually] noble." -- Lopez. The Story of Buddhism. p42

The Seven Deadly Sins mapped to the US. [via Keith418]

Illegal aliens have always been a problem in the United States. Ask any Indian. - Robert Orben

We see quotes like this all the time. Seldom is it meant as a counter to permitting immigration (whether illegal or just the super high counts we permit). It's as if the people speaking them are unaware of history -- or perhaps it is the arrogance of your typical American. For some reason they think that we won't go the way of the Native American if we allow ourselves to be culturally displaced. It's as if the (mostly) liberals think that what occurred to the natives wasn't all that bad or that it was ultimately beneficial. We came in, killed them off by gun & disease, weakened them with alcohol and herded them into little pens comprised of some of the least hospitable land in the union. We then consistently violated our treaties whenever convenient. Now we are told that we should permit unrestricted immigration because we were immigrants? Why do we think that we will escape the fate that has happened to every other group?

Computers and Art: Professor Cope wrote a program called EMI which analyzed a composers work and then would create a new composition in the style of that composer. (MP3's here). While several musicians were interested in performing these works, the controversy of a machine (possibly) imitating a great master caused their agents to protest & thus we only have computer generated musical instruments playing computer generated musical scores. Annoyed, Professor Cope then created Emily Howell, who created her own scores based on her own style. The CD should be out soon with Centaur Records.

Evidently the "Conservatives" are in a twitter because a school sang a line or two regarding Obama in a song about presidents during black history month after the inauguration. While school recitals are often very tiring, comparing them to the Khmer Rouge is a bit much. Stewart discusses this. Obamination of a nation.

Obama moves to oppress those who are too young to vote. He intends to increase the amount of time that children spend in school. Parents everywhere rejoice.

I'm Jealousy Masquerading as Class Consciousness, or Legislation is Morality for the Weak

I fondly remember "The Parking Lot is Full," a web comic dealing with angst, perversion, sex and the like. It ran from 1993 to 2002. I often refer to two of the strips. This is one of them. There is now an archive containing most of the entire run.

Speaking of comics, I just found "Cat and Girl" and I am reading through the archives. I found this one particularly funny as it occurred 6 days after the attack on the World Trade Center in NY. The one after it pretty much summed up my opinion in September of 2001.

This entries featured music video comes (no pun intended) thanks to rhonan who provided this link to the very Not Safe For Work video by Rammstein: German Pussy

It is necessary to distinguish between nationality and nationalism. The Middle Ages knew nationalities but not nationalisms. Nationality is a natural factor that encompasses a certain group of common elementary characteristics that are retained both in the hierarchical differentiation and in the hierarchical participation, which they do not oppose. Therefore, during the Middle Ages, castes, social bodies, and orders were articulated within various nationalities, and while the types of the warrior, noble, merchant, and artisan conformed to the characteristics of this or of that nation, these articulations represented at the same time wider, international units. Hence, the possibility for the members of the same caste who came from different nations to understand each other better than the members of different castes within the same nation.

Modem nationalism represents, with regard to this, a movement in the opposite direction. Modem nationalism is not based on a natural unity, but on an artificial and centralizing one. The need for this type of unity was increasingly felt at the same time as the natural and healthy sense of nationality was lost and as individuals approached the state of pure quantity, of being merely the masses, after every authentic tradition and qualitative articulation was destroyed. Nationalism acts upon these masses through myths and suggestions that are likely to galvanize them, awaken elementary instincts in them, flatter them with the perspectives and fancies of supremacy, exclusivism, and power. Regardless of its myths, the substance of modem nationalism is not an ethnos but a demos, and its prototype always remains the plebeian one produced by the French Revolution.
-- Evola. Excerpt from Revolt Against the Modern World

From the Deja Vu all over again department: Those who criticized Bush were unpatriotic terrorist supporters, those who criticize Obama are racists. I am still waiting for the "Change."

What happens when liberals write books about science... "Unscientific America has admirable goals, but it lacks substance."

Five things people often do not realize about evolution.
If the public doesn't get evolution, part of the reason may be because many don't fully appreciate some of the ideas behind the theory. Here's a rundown of five things about evolution that many people don't fully understand.

Any environmentalist who supports open immigration is simply deluded. Resources are finite, the number of people present to utilize these resources must be limited. Hmm, I wonder if anyone will tie the connection between increased resource consumption due, in large part, to lax immigration laws, and the need for an American empire?

I did not know that Beverly Cleary was born and raised in Oregon.

The Hollywood branch of the Multnomah County Library, near where she lived as a child, commissioned a map that is on its lobby wall of Henry Huggins's Klickitat Street neighborhood. Statues of her beloved characters Henry Huggins; the Huggins's dog, Ribsy; and Ramona Quimby can be found in Grant Park in Portland, Oregon. In June 2008, the two-campus K–8 school of the same neighborhood, Hollyrood-Fernwood, itself the product of a merger of two schools the previous year, was officially renamed Beverly Cleary School. As a child, Cleary attended the former Fernwood Grammar School, one of the two buildings that make up the school that now bear her namesake.

This seems kind of odd to me... Facebook & MySpace are giving birth to "Retrosexuals" -- continuing romances from when you were still a teen.

Finally, my other favorite cartoon from The Parking Lot is Full:

Chains of Connections

I started re-reading Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, a fabulous manga dealing with the twilight of humanity from the perspective of the gentle robot 'Alpha.' Near the end of Chapter One, they have her playing the Gekkin which is the Japanese name for the Chinese instrument known as the Yueqin. After reading about it, I decided I wanted to hear what it sounded like. YouTube is our friend. I found this video from the 2008.6.12 Liu Nguyen Plucked Festival. It features (according to the Google translator) the Chinese Plucked String Orchestra performing a piece I believe is called "Idea of a Non-Shaped Model."

<lj-embed id="41" />

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNi_Ksb9yDk

Migrations about the Internet

By years end will there be more women working than men?

Article on the City of the Future as the ultimate in Escapism and Fantasy. It uses modern day Tokyo as an example.
"Dystopian writers and filmmakers have always portrayed such anonymity as a terrifying and dehumanizing aspect of a possible future. But let's not forget that it is what people crave in cities, and what cities were invented to provide. Anonymity is the precondition of fantasy, and cities are primarily fantasy machines."

The Navy has a cool R&D department. Underwater Laser Communications.

A somewhat fun Erotica Photo blog.

Pigeon transfers data faster than South Africa's Telkom.

If the middle class seeks safety, how can society progress? NASA and the institutional policy of risk aversion.

EA Games is releasing Dante's Inferno with an interesting marketing campaign that has everyone in a tizzy.

The game seems interesting (for PS3 & X360).

Right action, wrong reasons department brings us MDC (More Dead Christians). They were by turns squeamish and appallingly violent. Eventually Nathan had concluded it was their very bloodthirstiness that made them erect so many legal and social barriers against culling the vicious from their midst. They didn't trust themselves to stop with the obviously evil." It made me laugh. [Wilks, Eileen. "Inhuman." On The Prowl]

While exposing my older children to classic "80s" music, I found out that Chrissy Amphlett (Divinyls) has MS. Also, can someone tell me why it is that I go to discogs to find the link for the Pain Teens and I get a review for this album?

Lenore Skenazy gives us this inspirational article "Childhood, stalled: Let kids grow up — and stop fighting phantom boogeymen"

Some interesting artwork by Benedict Ernst Some of it I find fascinating, others trite, but the marriage of commercialism & tradition reminds me of the marriage of the Grotesque & Beautific, which also fascinates me. Exhibit.

Our love is like a Brontosaurus... [XKCD]

"The ages in which the 'we' or conservative principle dominated favored 'socialism, nationalism, and popular idealism.'"
"The trend toward written codification continued in modern times. This Strasser attributed largely to liberal jurists who mistakenly identified rigid and uniform laws with legal equality"
Gottfried writes on Otto Strasser & National Socialism (PDF)
I can't help but equate the polarities of Strassers "law of triune polarity" with the downward spiral of the Kali Yuga. I also see the shift exemplified in American politics where we vacillate between a liberal phase & a conservative one, with a corresponding submergence of the self in mindless indulgence (liberal phase) and nationalistic fervor (conservative phase). I am unsure if Gottfried's label of Neoconservative for Strasser in the article (1969) is used in the same context of today's neoconservatives.

The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. - Herbert Spencer, Essays [1891]

'...the caste system ... is inherent in human nature, and Hinduism has simply made a science of it.' -- Gandhi (cited in Castes and Races by Frithjof Schuon)

The future (?) of romance:
<lj-embed id="40" />
Date my Avatar

Little Red Riding Hood predates Christ. On the origins of Fairy Tales.

As if the evolution & migration of man were not complicated enough, bones of Dmanisi hominins are found in Georgia (the country, not the state) which, if the dates are correct, change the patterns of migration by adding a Eurasian period to the timeline prior to the migration out of Africa.

Victims and Victimizers. A Czech Village dealing with its post WWII past.
It is sort of amusing that one of the fears is that the Germans will be able to pull off the same trick that the Jews did & reclaim the property they lost...

Q: In your book, The Absolute Fragile, you developed your thesis that here Albanians are supported as long as they remain victims, depoliticized subjects, and so on. If they want to move abroad they become toxic subjects, if they move inside they become fundamentalist, terrorists, radicals, and so on. Why is this so?

Zizek: First, I don’t think that there is anything specific concerning Kosovo in this.

This is just a general attitude of disgustingly well-meaning, Western charity, human rights liberals who like the others as far as they are passive victimized “others”. The moment when the others want to take the fate into their own hands, they are immediately suspected of, not just nationalism, fundamentalism, and so on.

This is the general feature of today’s global capitalism, as I often repeated in my books, the old joke that today we like to have the products deprived of their poisonous substance.

We have coffee without caffeine, sugar without sugar, Coca-Cola without caffeine, beer without alcohol. The West wants decaffeinated Kosovo. Here we are all paying the price. But it’s not only this. Did you noticed one of the nice paradoxes, logical paradoxes, where you can see how Yugoslavia was a totally hysterical space, was that each nation, except you, each nation in order to justify itself, tried to present to the West our own ego-ideal, as the best way to civilization against the barbarian others?

Serbs were all the time telling to Western media, “We are still the Christian West and you are basically and practically an outpost of Al Qaeda, or whatever you want, you and the Bosnians.” But then it goes on. This is what I like. Croats said, “we are civilised Western Catholics, Serbs are orthodox. We are the last fortress wall.” We, Slovenians, we played the same game too. We said, “We are not Balkans at all, we are middle Europe.”
http://www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/interviews/22067/

Thou bearest in Heaven at night

Life has been hectic, what with getting back from Japan, the Labor Day weekend with its demands & preperation for starting my Japanese language class, I barely have time to work at my job. Fortunately, I am still able to work & thus I can find these tidbits for your enjoyment.

keith418 provides this link showing how "liberalism" has moved from being a party of the people to just a bunch of (self)interest parties working to grease each others palms and how this cuts out the normal person...

"We" always think of the Southern Belle as a meek and unassuming example of the unliberated woman. This article shows how the woman may not have been "girt with a sword," but some did bear arms as a result of Union attempts to denigrate and subjugate them. [keith418]
I wish you could see me now with my hair parted on the side with my black velvet zouave on & pistol by my side & riding my fine colt, Beula. I know you would take me for a Guerilla. I never ride now or walk without my pistol. Quite warlike, you see. (Cordelia Lewis, "I Never Walk or Ride Without My Pistol (October 29, 1862)," in Heroines of Dixie, ed. Jones, 179 - 182)

Never forget, or should it be "With Friends Like These?" Another article on the attack on the USS Liberty.

While reading through some old news articles, I came across one about Iman Hams, a 13 year old girl butchered by the IDF while going to school. After she fell, the officer in charge fired two more bullets into her brain & then unloaded his clip into her body. Pretty disgusting. I checked on Wikipedia and found that the officer had been acquitted. This led to some data on the butchery of Palestinian children by Israeli's.

Since the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in September 2000 - which marked the beginning of the most recent upsurge in violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - at least 954 Palestinian and 123 Israeli children under the age of 18 have been killed, according to B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights monitoring group.

The first recorded incident when Palestinian children were targeted by IDF was on 2 November 1950 when three Palestinian children were shot, two fatally by IDF troops near Dayr Ayyub in the Latrun salient. First, we have the Manifesto of Futurist Musicians, then we have The Monarchist's Manifesto and then I found The Virtues of Deglobalization

Deglobalization:
The aim of the deglobalization paradigm is to move beyond the economics of narrow efficiency, in which the key criterion is the reduction of unit cost, never mind the social and ecological destabilization this process brings about. It is to move beyond a system of economic calculation that, in the words of John Maynard Keynes, made "the whole conduct of life...into a paradox of an accountant's nightmare."

Monarchist:
"Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes or film stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. 'Twas noontide of summer,
    And midtime of night,
  And stars, in their orbits,
    Shone pale, through the light
  Of the brighter, cold moon.
    'Mid planets her slaves,
  Herself in the Heavens,
